When Will Technology Adoption Increase?
Largely, auto transport has been an industry left behind by the technology wave, and those who do have access to the limited technology available tend to be slow to adopt. From a reliance on paperwork to depending on limited load board options, the auto transport industry is due for a technology renaissance. What will it take for the industry to go digital?
As more advanced transportation management systems and comprehensive auto transport platforms go to market in the industry, the more technology will advance. This will hopefully lead to advanced systems feeling more accessible to carriers and shippers, which will produce a greater visibility on the impactful return on investment that comes with modern auto transport tools.
Will COVID-19 Have a Lasting Impact?
If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s to get comfortable with the unknown. While auto transport took a big hit in the Spring of 2020, it’s already showing promising signs of recovery. But for those businesses who managed to survive, how will COVID-19 impact the industry on a long-lasting basis?
From slowed car sales to changes in car hauling needs, it’s difficult to tell what the long-term effects of COVID and the economic impact might result in. From what has been seen so far, there will be a change in how carriers and shippers manage cash flow and prioritize efficiency. What changes in expense management or accounting software integration do you predict?
Is Going Green a Concern?
The green initiatives have been a hot topic which became more real for the auto transport industry when California led the charge to require truck manufacturers to transition from diesel to zero-emission trucks. This mandate requires this initiative to begin in 2024 with every new truck sold being zero-emission by 2050. Since California has launched this initiative, 15 other states have joined in agreement. With this initial mandate, will this just be the beginning of going green in auto transport?
While there is no requirement for individual car haulers to abandon their diesel rigs and purchase zero-emission trucks, the state of gas and oil is something to consider, as well. States with heavy capacity needs, like California, are also states with ambitious climate goals. How does that change for diesel vehicles as they travel through these states? And will any restrictions force car haulers into zero-emission rigs?
The future of auto transport may not be well-known, but it is an exciting one and something we can immediately learn from listening to one another. From technology to car haulers to shippers, what do you think the future of auto transport industry will look like?
