by Ben Price

Before you’re ready to start on your journey as an auto transport worker, there are a few steps that must be taken first. One of those steps is filing all necessary paperwork. One mandatory piece of paperwork that all auto transport workers must complete is setting up your USDOT number. Here’s everything that you need to know about USDOT numbers, how to acquire one, and what steps you’ll need to take moving forward.

What is a USDOT Number?

A USDOT number is a unique 17-digit identification number that all motor carriers are required to have in the United States. The number is issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). USDOT numbers are required to be used by both commercial and private vehicles operating on public roads.

Why do I need a USDOT Number?

You need a USDOT number in order to legally transport vehicles. The purpose of USDOT numbers is to easily identify a motor carrier. It is also known as the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) identification number. Auto transport companies cannot haul loads without a USDOT number; essentially, a USDOT number is needed for any company that does business in the United States and wishes to have any access to federal highways.

Furthermore, advanced load boards such as Super Loadboard will not permit Carriers to book loads unless all of their paperwork is up-to-date. For these reasons, a USDOT number is necessary in order to operate a car hauling business.

How do I Get a USDOT Number?

To get a USDOT number, new applicants are required to register online through the Unified Registration System. Paper forms are no longer accepted for initial applications, but updates to existing registrations may do so.

USDOT numbers for drivers who wish to have operational authority must pay $300 in addition to submitting their application.

How Do I Find My USDOT Number?

The USDOT number is located on the license plate of one’s vehicle, but can also be found by visiting your local DMV office or online via the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) website and searching for a company by name, MC number, or DOT number.
