Every year, International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and their progress. And the auto transport industry, while historically male-dominated, has seen a remarkable shift in its gender composition. International Women’s Day presents the ideal opportunity to honor the women who have paved the way, challenged the norm, and made substantial contributions in our industry. On this special day, we pay tribute to the incredible women who have shaped the auto transport industry and continue to inspire change.
The Road Less Traveled: A Brief History of Women in Trucking
In the early days of trucking, the image of a woman behind the wheel was a rarity. However, women have always played an integral, if often overlooked, role in the trucking and auto transport industry. During World War I and II, when the men were away at war, women stepped up to fill the labor shortage, driving trucks and delivering goods that were crucial to the war effort.
Later, the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada was founded and the war’s Women’s Army Corps was formed in the United States, providing women with official opportunities to become truck drivers. After the Women In Trucking Association was established in the United States, which has since bolstered the number of female transport professionals, aimed to create a better working environment for female truck drivers, and now supports a vast network of women in the industry worldwide.
The narrative of women’s involvement in transportation stretches back decades, illuminating stories of resolve and resilience. From the early pioneers who navigated the automotive landscape to the trailblazers who broke into auto transport, their journeys are testament to their tenacity.
As women we have the unique ability to anticipate the needs of others and to be sensitive to both the person and their situation. These unique gifts are assets that our team of super women bring to the auto transportation industry each day.”
